Visual Artist – Brazil
SPERB, Gisele
I was born in 1963, in Encruzilhada do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. I was a child, painting has enchanted me: gouache, colored pencils, whatever paint is available, even “wall paint”. I created narratives with the images I produced, it was like reading children's books, the images told stories. In 1975, after my father's death, when I was 12 years old, I believe that painting has become a haven. I share this memory because I cannot imagine another answer to the question “why paint?”, A question given a linguistic perspective, because painting goes beyond the choice for materiality, it is one of my ways of speaking. At the age of 18, misfortunes imposed the need to drop out of school and start working at a bank, which took all my time, "silencing me" for a long time.
I studied Visual Arts at the Federal University of Pelotas, starting a series of self-portraits in different languages. In 2016, my works started from reflections on time as a denunciation of a way of life that distanced us from Ehfarung experiences. By the definitions of experience, Walter Benjamin, German Jewish philosopher and sociologist, distinguishes them in: Erlebnis, a superficial experience that is entering the sphere of experiences, and Erfahrung, which refers to a more intense experience, a personal transformation that comes to be shared, which was unusual in contemporary life.
Past experiences flowed as formative experiences, making me dedicate myself faithfully to the issue of temporality and creative process, this was the theme of my book, under the title “Epiphany in the creative process: when time is different.”
I have the perception that my past journey, not only with regard to interest as a child about paints, but also with regard to all my experiential choices, were and are sources that corroborate and guide my current artistic processes.
I focused on studies of a not only technical nature, in the field of painting, but also philosophical. My work is free for the establishment of meanings.
My reference artists are Paul Cézanne, who promoted 20th century art, Willem De Kooning and Iberê Camargo, who travel the paths of abstract expressionism.
For me, the creative process is epiphanic, just as the completed work can be an epiphany for the observer.
